Most of us struggle with the same question when getting ready to leave for a week’s vacation. Do I leave the air conditioning on or turn it off?
If you leave it on, you’ll be paying expensive utility bills to cool a home no one will be using. If you turn it off, then you have to wonder how hot it will get while you’re away, and how long it will take to get the house cool when you return. You’ll also have to worry about the moisture building up in your home, and the potential health and structural damage that can result from extended high humidity.
The answer to this dilemma is a simple device called a programmable thermostat. If you don’t have one yet, you may want to consider installing one or more.
Not only can you program your thermostat to maintain a certain temperature while you are away, but you can also have it set to cool the house down to a temperature you are comfortable with before you come home from vacation. These devices are also very useful in day-to-day use, because you can set your system temp a little higher during the work day, and have it programmed to cool the house down right before you come home from work.
Not wasting energy means not wasting money. You will have a little more to spend on vacation if it isn’t blowing through the vents of your home in the form of cool air when you’re out of town.
