The recent flooding in Arlington Heights and the surrounding areas has caused a lot of damage and headaches for people. The most important issues that should be addressed are the safe operation of the heating, air conditioning, and water heating systems.
There were two types of water problems.
1) Sewer Water
2) Rain Water
If sewer water has reached the point to where it has saturated the insulation in the furnace or hot water heater, the equipment should be replaced. This is a health issue. No amount of cleaning is going to completely eliminate the contamination. Since the furnace circulates air throughout the home it will circulate the contaminates.
Rain water is a different issue depending on where it came from. If it has reached the insulation, determination on whether the equipment should be replaced should be done by certified heating and air conditioning technicians.
If any type of water has reached a gas component, that component must be replaced. This is a safety issue. Even if you were able to get the furnace or water heater lit, there is the chance that it may not shut off. Change the component or replace the equipment!
If any type of water that has reached the electrical components, those component should be replaced. Components that are still working after getting wet will have a shortened life and if like me, it will fail on a holiday!
The maintenance of your heating, air conditioning and hot water heating equipment should be done on an annual basis. If there is any question on the operation of your equipment or its safety, have a qualified heating and air conditioning professional address your issue.
